UN POISON VIOLENT - Katell Quillévéré

Dienstag 15.07.2014
20:30 Uhr
vorgestellt von Sabine Herpich

Frankreich 2010 / 92 Min. / Regie: Katell Quillévéré / Produktion: Justin Taurand / Buch: Mariette Désert & Katell Quillévéré / Kamera: Tom Harari / Szenenbild: Anna Falguères / Montage: Thomas Marchand / Musik: Olivier Mellano / Darsteller.innen: Clara Augarde, Lio, Michel Galabru, Youen Leboulanger-Gourvil, Stefano Cassetti u.a.

"The tender, frank and award-winning debut feature from Katell Quillévéré has a young girl's impending confirmation as the setting for a collision between love, faith and burgeoning sexuality.
14 year-old Anna (striking newcomer Clara Augarde) has returned from boarding school to her small bucolic village in Brittany, where she lives with her devoutly Catholic and newly-single mother (Lio) in the house of her ailing paternal grandfather (Michel Galabru). Along with her absent father and the compassionate parish priest, these adults offer new and often-conflicting world views and advice to the confused teenager. Her budding relationship with a neighbourhood boy Pierre (Youen Leboulanger-Gourvil) unveils additional unexplored territory, the conflict between faith and sexual discovery may be irreconcilable...
Delicately shifting between these various characters just as our protagonist pinballs uneasily among them, Love Like Poison is beautifully written and acted, augmented by an evocative score, a rebellious streak of black humour and lushly photographed locations. Rapturous in tone, this is one of the most personal coming-of-age tales of recent French cinema, marking Quillévéré and her young star as major discoveries."
"The film has a wonderful ease and flow: its relatively brief running time is crowded with incident and plot, and yet each scene, each shot, each gesture unfurls in a winningly unhurried way. There's a brilliant scene in which Anna's boyfriend, Pierre (Youen Leboulanger-Gourvil), plays a love song he's written for her on the guitar, prefaced with a little gasp of nerves. There is tenderness and even a kind of nobility in the moment. […] it is a film whose gentleness and humanity will leave you sighing with assent."

D 2014 / Dokumentarfilm, 81 Min., rumänisch und deutsch mit deutschen Untertiteln / Regie: Sabine Herpich, Diana Botescu / Kamera: Sabine Herpich, Florian Lampersberger / Montage: Maja Tennstedt / Mischung: Jan Cziharz, Niklas Kammertöns / Produktion: Sabine Herpich / Mit: Marina Carmen Badea, Nicolae George Badea, Alexandru Daniel Badea, Marian Razvan Badea, Rebeca Ana-Maria Badea

LITTLE FUGITIVE - Ray Ashley & Morris Engel & Ruth Orkin

Dienstag 20.05.2014
20:30 Uhr
vorgestellt von Sebastian Markt

USA 1953  / 80 min / Directed by Ray Ashley, Morris Enge, Ruth Orkin / Produced by Ray Ashley, Morris Engel / Screenplay by Ray Ashley, Morris Engel, Ruth Orkin / Starring Richie Andrusco, Richard Brewster / Music by Eddie Manson / Cinematography Morris Engel / Editing by Ruth Orkin, Lester Troob

"We had decided to shoot a very simple film, on the life of a boy. In winter 1951 we started to hold meetings and were able to scrape together enough money to start, but we still hadn’t found the right boy. We spent hours and hours in the usual places - schools, agencies, at friends - until we found Richie Andrusco, who turned out to be the ideal choice. At the beginning Richie frequently looked into the camera, but he quickly got the hang of it, and often like a true professional asked me to film a scene in just one take."
[Morris Engel]

"The New American Cinema is abolishing the Budget Myth, proving that good, internationally marketable films can be made on a budget of $25,000 to $200,000. Shadows, Pull My Daisy, The
Little Fugitive
prove it. Our realistic budgets give us freedom from stars, studios, and producers. The film-maker is his own producer, and, paradoxically, low-budget films give a higher return margin than big-budget films. The low budget is not a purely commercial consideration. It goes with our ethical and aesthetic beliefs, directly connected with the things we want to say, and the way we want to say them."

"You have to be extremely tough in making a film about children"

MEANWHILE IN MAMELODI - Benjamin Kahlmeyer

Dienstag 13.05.2014
20:30 Uhr
vorgestellt von Benjamin Kahlmeyer (Regie) und Stefan Neuberger (Kamera)

D 2011 / 75min / Buch und Regie: Benjamin Kahlmeyer / Bild: Stefan Neuberger / Montage: Benjamin Entrup / Ton: Jonathan Schorr / Musik: John Gürtler / Producer: Boris Frank / Produktion: Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg

Uraufführung: DOK Leipzig 2011 / Deutscher Wettbewerb

Set against the raucous backdrop of the 2010 World Cup, Meanwhile in Mamelodi is a beautifully crafted portrait of a place and one family’s daily life inside it. The Mtsweni family lives in the Pretoria township of the title, in the district known as Extension 11. Their world is a ramshackle collection of corrugated tin dwellings and makeshift shops, open sewers littered with debris and red-earth rectangles filled with soccer-playing children and teens. Seventeen-year-old Mosquito is one of those kids. As she studies for math tests, flirts with boys and shops with her best friend, her father Steven prepares his “tuck shop” for the promise of cash-flush tourists. Meanwhile, his wife struggles with mental illness. The Mtswenis’ lives unfold as the Cup brings new hope to the ravaged town. Extension 11 buzzes with the drone of vuvuzelas, signaling a new South Africa has arrived. Despite the poverty around her, Mosquito insists this is not her parents’ country. She is the face of South Africa’s future—part of “a new generation free to do all things.” Mosquito’s story is told with tremendous musicality—a sense of rhythm and vibration permeates each scene. Through a rich color palette of turquoise, gold and red, director Benjamin Kahlmeyer imbues his frame with texture and life, illustrating a potent hope emerging from the rubble.

EXHIBITION - Joanna Hogg

Dienstag 15.04.2014
20:30 Uhr
vorgestellt von Jan Künemund

GB 2013 / 104 min / written & directed by Joanna Hogg / Camera: Ed Rutherford / Editor: Helle le Fevre/ Production Design: Stephane Collonge / Art Director: Pedro Moura / Sound: Howard Peryer / Supervising Sound Sesigner: Jovan Ajder / Supervising Sound Editor: Ajder / Assistant Director: Paolo Guglielmotti / Casting: Olivia Scott-Webb.
Cast: Viv Albertine, Liam Gillick, Tom Hiddleston, Harry Kershaw, Mary Roscoe, Christopher McWatters et. al.

Worldpremiere: Locarno, Int. Competition 2013

“With acute sensitivity, Brit writer-helmer Joanna Hogg’s third feature, ‘Exhibition’, explores the difficulty of telling inside from outside, intimacy from estrangement, and revelation from concealment. It seems entirely appropriate, then, that the whole thing teeters between very boring and completely fascinating, like being stuck on a plane in business-class seats next to a bickering couple you can’t stop eavesdropping on. Formally more ambitious but even more spare, brooding and oblique than her uncompromisingly rarefied previous pics, ‘Unrelated’ and ‘Archipelago’, ‘Exhibition’ could divide Hogg’s small but loyal pool of fans.”
"To look at your three films as a progression, you seem to be going in an opposite direction to most, narrowing your focus and your canvas with each film. Is that deliberate?

It’s true there is a determination not to do that indie-film-to-Hollywood thing. So I’m not consciously swimming against the tide but there is something about wanting to keep my films at a certain scale and not leap to bigger budgets. I’m interested in creating a body of work that I can have some creative control over.
It’s quite difficult to do because people assume you’re going to go on to bigger things. But I worked in a more industrial way on TV, and a less personal way, so now I’m working very counter to that work. And so far the stories that I’ve written have worked with the scale of production that I like. Never say never though!
