"We had decided to shoot a very simple film, on the life of a boy. In winter 1951 we started to hold meetings and were able to scrape together enough money to start, but we still hadn’t found the right boy. We spent hours and hours in the usual places - schools, agencies, at friends - until we found Richie Andrusco, who turned out to be the ideal choice. At the beginning Richie frequently looked into the camera, but he quickly got the hang of it, and often like a true professional asked me to film a scene in just one take."
