Ein Old Joy is the story of two friends, Kurt (Will Oldham) and Mark (Daniel London), who re-unite for a weekend camping trip in a forest near Portland, Oregon. For Mark, the trip is a last hurrah before the looming responsibility of fatherhood. Kurt, for his part, considers it yet another of his many youthful adventures. Minutenlang folgt man den beiden auf ihrem Weg zu einer heißen Quelle, ohne dass dabei etwas Nennenswertes passiert, fast meint man, den Weg mitzugehen. Old Joy ist mit einer Handkamera und ohne künstliches Licht aufgenommen. Doch anders als bei den Dogma Filmen bleibt einem das Handkameragewackele erspart. Ruhig und unaufgeregt nimmt Kameramann Peter Sillen die beiden Wanderer in den Blick und setzt im Vorbeigehen die eigentlichen Stars des Films in Szene: die dichte Waldlandschaft, einen plätschernden Bach, eine Schnecke, die übers Moos kriecht. Manchmal erklingen dazu Gitarrensoli von Yo La Tengo, die die meditative Stimmung des Films noch verstärken. (Tagesspiegel)
