“My movies are not for everyone, but anyone.” (Arnaud Desplechin)
„I love the popular forms. Stupid, thanksgiving, genre movies... I’m quite proud to be a part of it. That you have a high culture and a popular culture mixed together. To me, that’s really a utopia and only cinema can mix that way and that deeply all available meanings one can imagine.“
Inhalt:

Even from his first feature film La Vie des morts, Arnaud Desplechin was already establishing a quintessentially dynamic framework for his recurring themes on surrogacy, human idiosyncrasies, and the ephemeral nature of desire.

The plot was really simple and I guess it had to do with David Cronenberg. This guy, this cousin is between life and death, and the girl arrives at the parents’ house, she starts puking and she doesn’t have her period and she doesn’t understand what’s happening. After a while she realises she’s pregnant with something which is the death of her cousin. When she delivers, at the very same moment she learns the cousin died at the hospital. The irony of it. Perhaps the idea is so brutal that the spectators can’t follow this plot at all.
Arnaud Desplechin in einem Interview mit Marco Bauer (Senses of cinema, Issue 58)
"It's a lot of work to have density—to fill the screen with details and small stuff, trying to imagine for each character a past and a future. I think it has to do with a hunger and it goes back to my first film [La Vie des Morts]. I was scared to death that I would never make another one, and I wanted so much to work with actors, so even though it was very low-budget and we only had five days, I wrote more characters than I could really put in: 25 actors in this one-hour film. I was hungry—I just wanted a lot of them, quantity not quality, different actors, different ages."
