APAN - Jesper Ganslandt

Dienstag 25.9.2012
20.30 Uhr
vorgestellt von Thomas Moritz Helm

APAN | Schweden 2009 | 81 min | Format: 1:1,85 | Regie: Jesper Ganslandt | Drehbuch: Jesper Ganslandt | Kamera: Frederik Wenzel | Schnitt: Jesper Ganslandt | Cast: Olle Sarri, Eva Rexed, Francoise Joyce...

APAN "is certainly one of the most talked about and critically acclaimed Swedish features of 2009 and opened internationally at the Venice Film Festival. Jesper is ... a well respected and established auteur and one of the strongest names in the new Swedish wave of young directors."

Memorable.  There’s a dangerous word in a review.  But it is exactly that – The Ape is a sustained study in alienation, guilt, male rage and psychological fracture (with a whiff of misogyny).  Though Ganslandt is reported to have drawn on Mike Leigh’s work, this piece has its roots deeply embedded in Dostoyevsky, Edvard Munch, Ibsen and Strindberg, not to mention Ingmar Bergman.  Take a male character from a Munch painting, one of the lesser known ones, like ‘Golgotha‘ (1900) or ‘Evening on Karl Johan Street’ (1893), and imagine that man now walking around modern Stockholm. Follow him with a steady-cam, and you get The Ape. (Ambrose Hogan)

PLAY - Ruben Östlund

Dienstag 18.9.2012

vorgestellt von Thomas Moritz Helm

PLAY | Schweden 2011 | 118 min | Format: 1:1,85 | Regie: Ruben Östlund | Drehbuch: Ruben Östlund, Erik Hemmensdorff | Kamera: Marius Dybwad Brandrud | Schnitt: Jakob Secher Schulsinger | Cast: Kevin Vaz, Anas Abdirahman, Yannick Diakité, Abdiaziz Hilowle, Sebastian Hegmar, Sebastian Blyckert, Johan Jonason...

What’s the line between a provocative, no-holds-barred drama about race relations and a straight-up racist film?” (Noel Murray - AV Club)

An astute observation based on real cases of bullying. In central Gothenburg, Sweden, a group of boys, aged 12-14, robbed other children on about 40 occasions between 2006 and 2008. The thieves used an elaborate scheme called the 'little brother number' or 'brother trick', involving advanced role-play and gang rhetoric rather than physical violence. (coproduction office)

A loaded racial incident based on events that happened in Sweden several years ago is festooned with too much formalistic baggage in Play. Writer-director Ruben Ostlund, in his third feature, after The Guitar Mongoloid and Involuntary, triggers immediate interest in this provocative drama by his use of numerous long takes and often fixed camera positions. But the ultimate effect of his studied techniques is more restricting than beneficial, which, combined with a protracted running time, faintly self-righteous air and a perplexing, misguided coda, produces a sense of letdown at the end despite the strength of much that has come before. Some trimming of the more extraneous material would help, as the confrontational drama has some sales potential. (

DE OFRIVILLIGA - Ruben Östlund

Dienstag 10.9.2012

vorgestellt von Thomas Moritz Helm

DE OFRIVILLIGA | Schweden 2008 | 98 min | Format: 1,85:1 | Regie: Ruben Östlund | Drehbuch: Ruben Östlund, Erik Hemmensdorff | Kamera: Marius Dybwad Brandrud | Schnitt: Ruben Östlund

Eine ganz wunderbare Überleitung von Van Sant zu Östlund:

The influence of Gus Van Sant at his most self-indulgent is in evidence throughout this dry as dust collection of filmed scenarios. The camera doesn't move. Shots are deliberately framed in such a way that heads are cut off. The sound is ambient. The characters are shallow and uninteresting. If there were such a thing as a Swedish Dogme manifesto, Involuntary could be an example of it. As it stands, it's merely an example of how not to make a film, unless you want to limit the audience to folks who are convinced that the lack of a story and technical ineptitude are the mark of genius. It's hard to believe this was Sweden's official entry for the Academy Awards in 2010. (John Seal – imdb)

It's almost summer in Sweden and minor indiscretions and misbehavior abound. Leffe likes to show off for his friends and play salacious pranks, especially when he's drinking. Meanwhile, a righteous grade-school teacher doesn't know where to draw the line: she insists her fellow educators need a bit of instruction. Then there are two young teenage girls who like to pose for sexy photos and to party, but one night in a park, one of them is found passed out drunk by a complete stranger. (Cannes Film Festival)

Ruben Östlund’s Involuntary, a chillingly precise examination of social behaviour and its boundaries, is unquestionably one of the films of the year. (Neil Young – Tribune Magazine)
